The 3 Questions I Ask Before Hiring Anyone

When it comes to hiring, I’ve learned that the right question reveals more than a polished CV ever could.

Here are 3 signals I look for when I build a team designed to scale:

1. “What tools do you use—and how?”

You learn so much about someone just by asking this.
Are they curious? Resourceful? Capable of getting things done without hand-holding?

Example:
- “How would you do this ____ ?”
- “I’d use Zapier. Last week, I built this...”

Their answer reveals how they think, not just what they know.

2. Can they outshine me in their zone of genius?

Each of my department heads must be better than me at their specific role.
That’s how I scale.
That’s how we grow.

If I’m still the smartest person in the room… I’m doing it wrong because the business is scaling at my speed.

3. Are they hungry for growth—and do I tell them so?

People want to grow.
Be direct about the opportunities ahead.
Growth-minded people need to know there’s a path upward.

Be clear. Be real. And yes, be ambitious—with them.
